Today, I watched the movie "Enough" starring Jennifer Lopez, and it struck a chord deep within me. The film's themes of resilience, self-reliance, and empowerment resonated strongly, reminding me of another favorite, "Where the Crawdads Sing" by Delia Owens. Both stories feature strong female protagonists who have faced trauma and adversity, and their journeys toward healing and triumph are a testament to the human spirit's capacity for growth and transformation.
As Evy Poumpouras notes in her book "Becoming Bulletproof," "Research shows that watching a movie can set complex processes in your brain to work toward shifting your psychological mindset. This is what allows us to get swept up in a movie, to internalize the struggles of a protagonist we relate to and rejoice in their victories." This is precisely what happened as I watched "Enough" - I found myself fully invested in Slim's story, cheering her on as she fought for her freedom and reclaimed her life.
Both "Enough" and "Where the Crawdads Sing" share a common thread - the idea that sometimes the world is not on the right side, and we have to dig deep to create the world we desire to live in. Slim and Kya, the protagonists of these stories, are forced to confront their own vulnerabilities and limitations and find ways to adapt and survive in a world that often seems hostile or unforgiving.
But it's in these moments of darkness, that we discover our greatest strengths. As I reflected on these stories, I realized that they offer a powerful message - that we have the capacity to create the world we want to live in, even when the world around us seems determined to hold us back.
So let us draw inspiration from these stories, and from the strong women who inhabit them. Let us remember that we too can overcome adversity and that we too can create the world we desire to live in. And let us never forget the power of storytelling to transform our minds, shift our psychological mindset, and inspire us to become the best versions of ourselves.
